San Juan is Argentina’s
number two wine producing province,
both in terms of vineyard cultivation
area and volume of wine produced. The
province has a number of contiguous
valleys, including Tulum (the most important
of all these valleys, straddling the
banks of the San Juan river), Ullum-Zonda
(El Pedernal Valley) -origin of top
quality grapes-, Calingasta, Jáchal,
Iglesia and Fértil.
In this area, altitudes range from 1,350
meters, in El Pedernal Valley (a micro-climate
zone within Ullum-Zonda, recognized
for its excellent agronomic quality),
down to 600 meters in the lower districts
of Tulum Valley.
The climate is semi-arid, with a historic
rainfall pattern of 150 mm in the summer,
whereas in the winter it is very cold,
with daily frosts in June and July.
The zone’s low humidity determines
pollution free crops and low use of
chemicals.
The combination of all these factors
results in the wine’s flavor,
which commences in the soil and the
microclimate where the grape grows. |
