Although Argentina has a history of over 400 years in winemaking, the industry acquired its present form with the arrival of European immigrants in the 19th Century. However it was more recently that Argentina experienced unprecedented growth, climbing steadily up into the ranks as one of the world´s top wine producing countries. At the foot of the Andes, in the western part of Argentina, between 22 and 42 degrees southern latitude, lies a vast wine map of which the province of San Juan is an important part. This winemaker's paradise is blessed with an exceptional terroir with unique and distinct characteristics: a wide range of temperatures between day and night, exceptional soil, climatic conditions and altitude (the vineyards are located between 300 meters and 2,400 meters above sea level). Another distinctive feature of Argentine wine production is its natural healthiness. Thanks to the dry climate, diseases that generally attack the vines are uncommon and therefore, less agricultural treatments are used, resulting in healthier grapes. Runoff streams that originate in the Andes provide pure and ample water for irrigation. Moreover, vineyards are located far away from the pollution of industrial cities. |
